What is the Little League Challenger Program?
The Little League Challenger Program is an adaptive baseball program designed for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges to provide the opportunity to enjoy the full benefits of participating in Little League: building confidence, making friends, and having fun on the field.
Athletes generally participate in one weekday practice and one weekend game per week in April-June. WSLL partners with Washington State Little League District 7 to facilitate this program in the greater Seattle area.
Who can participate in the Little League Challenger Program?
The Challenger Program welcomes any individual with a physical or intellectual challenge who lives in the West Seattle community. The Little League Challenger Program accommodates players ages 4-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in school. If a player is able to participate in the traditional Little League Baseball or Softball program with reasonable accommodations, they are encouraged to do so.
Is there a cost to participate in the Challenger Program?
There is no fee to participate in the WSLL Challenger Program.
How do Challenger Games Work?
Challenger games are designed to be flexible, supportive, and fun. Games typically are 1–2 innings and last about an hour. All players bat each inning and play defensively. Little League provides teams with a rulebook featuring best practices for inclusive and adaptive play.
What are "buddies" and what role do they have in the Challenger Program?
“Buddies” are volunteers who assist Challenger athletes as needed, whether with batting, running the bases, or playing defense. Buddies are often peer athletes from WSLL Baseball or Softball teams and help ensure players stay safe and engaged while promoting friendship and inclusive play.
