West Seattle
Little League Sweeps District 7 All-Star Tournaments
Goes Undefeated (12-0) in District Tournament Play
July 11th, 2008
For the
first time in its 50 year history, West Seattle Little League (WSLL) swept the
District 7 All-Star tournaments winning the 9-10, 10-11 and the 11-12
divisions. All three teams were undefeated and will advance to state
tournaments across Washington
later this month.
District
7 tournament play began on June 21st for the WSLL 9-10 All-Star
team. Their first game was against
PacWest LL, the league that hosted both the 9-10 and 10-11 tournaments. West Seattle pulled ahead after a 4-4 tie in the sixth to
win 8-5. In game two, the South Highline National LL All-Stars proved no
match for West Seattle pitching with WSLL
winning 7-2. Game three against Renton LL had WSLL leading the entire
game, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits, resulting in a 10-8 victory. The
championship game was a rematch against the South Highline Nationals and proved
to be a nail biter. The Nationals lead
3-2 at the end of the first inning. WSLL took the lead with a three-run
homer in the second inning. The game was
tied three times, in the third, fourth and fifth innings. West Seattle pulled ahead 8-7 in the bottom of the fifth
inning and secured the victory by ending the game on a third out at home
plate with the bases loaded.
The
10-11 team also played at PacWest LL fields, beginning their tournament on June
21st with a decisive 10-1 win over PacWest. Game one included a WSLL homerun and a double
play. West Seattle
pitchers delivered a no-hitter in game two with a lopsided 24-0 defeat of South
Highline American LL. Game three against the South Highline Nationals proved to
be the most exciting game of the tournament.
Down 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, West
Seattle rallied to win 7-6 with bats swinging. That momentum followed the team to the
championship game on June 28th, where they again faced the South Highline
Nationals. West Seattle only allowed one
hit, threw down a double play and also knocked another homerun out of the park,
resulting in a 10-run mercy rule win in the fifth inning with a final score of
10-0.
On June
28th, both the 9-10 and the 10-11 teams returned to Bar-S Field
victorious to cheer on the 11-12 players in the Majors tournament opener. West Seattle
kept the winning streak alive with solid pitching, defeating PacWest 3-1. Game two followed on June 29th with
West Seattle’s formidable
offense putting on an impressive display, including a homerun, easily defeating
the South Highline Nationals 11-2. The
strong bats continued in game three for WSLL with three homeruns resulting in
an 8-3 win over Renton Little League.
Facing the South Highline Nationals in the championship game on July 3rd,
West Seattle fired off a grand slam homerun in
the bottom of the first inning. The
result was an early lead that South Highline could not overcome, and West
Seattle prevailed 6-4.
